Classes are over for the Winter session. Thanks to all our students, teachers and members of the Montreal Irish Language Study Circle.Starting Monday, June 7th 2010, if any students would like to practice their Irish, you can call me at 514-795-8752 and meet up Monday nights from 6PM to 9 PM at O'Regan's Pub to keep your Irish going until classes resume in the fall. If no one calls I won't come by. There is no charge to attend, but the Pub does appreciate if you can order at least a coffee or a pint while you're there.
Come on down and bring your notebook.

COMHRÁ has prided itself on teacher John Donahue's fluency in the Irish language, as a result of his participation in the Montreal Irish Language 'Language Circle' since its inception. The truth of the matter is that John is really a product of his own determination: to master a language where few opportunities are given to practice it, in North America or in most sectors of its country of origin, for that matter.
Born and raised in the rural community of St. Sylvester, (an Irish settlement in the Lotonière), John's mother, Marion Boyce, was a great believer in higher education. In an area where agricultural demands and economic necessity made it difficult for the average youngster to go beyond a partial high school education, John and his siblings completed university and many went on to post-graduate studies.
As well as teaching Irish and Spanish languages at the CEGEP, university and continuing-education levels, John has been active in language history and in linguistic conferences and symposiums. We are very fortunate to have him available to COMHRÁ.
