Founded in 1993 by (Dr.) Gus O'Gorman, born and raised in Galway, and the late Sean Treacy, a Dubliner, MILSC is a non-profit organization dedicated to the speaking and promotion of the Irish language. Neither Gus nor Sean were native speakers, having learned the language through the Irish school system. They shared, however, a love of the "teanga" of their forefathers which motivated them to spend a great deal of time and effort in making the learning of it possible for their fellow Montrealers. COMHRÁ (pronounced CO'RA and meaning "conversation") first started language instruction classes in St. Augustine's in N.D.G. sharing rather cramped quarters with Bernadette Short's Irish dancing classes. Thanks to the generosity of Father McLean s.j., classes were moved to Loyola High School about 1999 and are still being held there. Funding for the modest remuneration of teachers and other general expenses are met by student tuitions and an annual grant from St. Patrick's Society. In addition to fall and winter sessions of classes Comhrá organizes a weekend of intensive Irish language instruction in late fall in the Lower Laurentians. It is attended by a good number of active students as well as others from Ottawa, Kingston and the U.S.
